Quote: "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit, He prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.” (John 15:2)

Points of Leadership is all about equipping leaders in maximizing their leadership for the people they lead and care for. Good leaders grow on purpose. Points of Leadership is where that growth happens.

Hosted by Dr. Feyi Obamehinti, ordained minister, author, and leadership educator, alongside co-host Kristin Jaeck, CEO of ReWorking Strategies, combine over three decades of corporate leadership experience, this podcast delivers practical, faith-informed leadership development for leaders in any industry who want to lead with greater impact, integrity, and care for the people they serve. So, pull up a chair, call a friend, and take a listen.

Thank you for all your feedback on our last episode! We are honored to serve you and love that you had great takeaways from part one of this new series on bounty of growth. We are continuing from where we left off. In this episode of Points of Leadership, we will examine the pruning process in the leadership journey. Some leadership articles have different frames for the pruning process in the leadership journey. For example, the Havard Business Review uses phrases like; selective focus, workforce optimization or the familiar one- change management.

With fall around the corner, this episode uses plant analogy to examine the pruning process in leadership. For instance, why are stray branches taken off a plant intentionally, or why does farmers cut off wilted leaves or spoiled fruits from a crop. From a human perspective, God created humans with the ability for our brains to “self-prune” so that our brains can be more efficient. Synaptic pruning is a neuro-developmental process that allows the human brain to remove excess or weak synapses.

Furthermore, in this episode of Points of Leadership, we provide practical discussions on how the pruning process improves health, better light penetration and improved air flow. All while making the distinct connection with business ideas, relationships or company culture.

As always, the leadership principles we share here on Points of Leadership are for any leader in any industry that desires to take care of those they lead well through the overflow of his or her life. So, pull up a chair, call a friend and take a listen and share with any industry leader in your life. Thank you for engaging with us.

Points of Leadership is all about equipping leaders in maximizing their leadership for the people they lead and care for. Good leaders grow on purpose. Points of Leadership is where that growth happens. This is a guest post for leaders building new businesses from scratch. It can be daunting, but it does not have to be! With years of experience, wisdom and guidance from leaders that have built and scaled successful businesses, leaders on the building or scaling journeys can learn a few things to make their journeys much smoother and encouraging. Such is this guest post. Thank you to B. Holland for being part of our network. We appreciate you sharing your wisdom, experience and guidance with us!

The Idea Is Free. The Execution Is Everything.

Okay so you had The Idea. You know the one. It hit you at 2am, or in the shower, or during a meeting where you were supposed to be paying attention to something else. And it felt so obviously good that you sat up in bed a little. Then Tuesday happened. Then Wednesday. And The Idea is still sitting there in your Notes app, waiting for you to take action! This is normal, almost boringly so. The gap between having an idea and doing anything with it isn't about the idea being bad. It's about the fact that starting is genuinely uncomfortable and your brain would rather you didn't.

Here's a thing nobody says loudly enough. Your idea is probably an ingredient right now, in a bunch of small, annoying ways you can't see yet because you haven't shown it to anyone. And that's fine. The founders who make it aren't the ones who got it right on the first try, they're the ones who were willing to be coached and taught repeatedly, without quitting. So don't polish. Don't write a beautiful deck. Write one sentence explaining what problem this idea solves, no buzzwords allowed. If that sentence is hard to write, that's information. It means you have a hobby right now, not a business, and there's zero shame in that, it just changes what you do next.

Then go talk to people. Real people, real conversations, not a survey with a dropdown menu. Ask them about the problem, not your solution. You will hear things you didn't want to hear. Let the discomfort cause you to reflect and not get upset. Then keep going anyway. Money is the part that freezes everyone up, so let's just say it: you probably don't need investors to start. Many businesses get built by staying scrappy and reinvesting whatever trickles in, an approach people call bootstrapping, and the constraint is kind of the point, it forces decisions a pile of investor cash would let you dodge. For a lower-risk entry ramp, it's worth understanding website flipping startup costs too, since improving something that already exists is a very different math problem than building from zero.

If you're the type who needs a framework to hang thoughts on, writing a business plan works fine, not because you need fifty pages of formal plan, but because answering the questions out loud exposes the parts you've been quietly avoiding thinking about.
A rough order of operations, and I do mean rough, nobody does this in a straight line:
  • Talk to at least ten people who actually have the problem before you build anything.
  • Make the smallest, ugliest version of the solution that still works.
  • Charge based on the value it creates, not on what feels comfortable to type into a price field.
  • Find one person who's already made the mistakes you're about to make.
  • Set a specific date for your first sale. Small counts. Small is still success.
On the mentor thing, you don't need a cool network for this. Free founder mentor matching pairs you with someone who's already lived through the exact challenge you're currently having, no strings attached. There's something strangely calming about sitting across from someone who survived the thing you're currently struggling about at 1am.

Can we talk about the emotional side for a second, because nobody does. Building something from nothing is a specific kind of loneliness, and it doesn't always look like anxiety. Sometimes it just looks like being tired in a way that doesn't match what you did that day. Don't push through it and call it hustle. Resources built specifically around processing founder stress and burnout exist because overcoming this part is success too. For what it's worth, you're not doing this alone in some weird vacuum. New business formation data shows it's climbed well past where it sat before the pandemic. Hence, there's a genuinely large wave of first-timers out there walking through the same thing you are right now.

Once you've got something worth showing, put it somewhere people can see it and lean in to it. Early software product launches run on a specific playbook, but the underlying idea travels beyond software: momentum on day one matters more than perfect polish. And if you want a structured, free way to pressure test your assumptions before spending real money, self-paced founder training is sitting right there waiting for you to stop overthinking and start it.

None of this guarantees anything. But the people who make it past year one almost always share one habit: they kept refining instead of quitting the moment their reality disagreed with the actual plan. Your idea isn't fully developed yet either. And that is perfect. Because that is just where you're supposed to start.
